Are you Genuine? ...Nubuck? or Suede?

We often get asked what the differences are between genuine leather, nubuck and suede.  It is totally a matter of preference, but over the years working with such a variety of exceptional quality leathers, we have come to find these key differences play a big part in your shoe-making decision and wearing experience.

Genuine leather, nubuck and suede are equally popular, each holding their own in a sea of faux options, through their unique and distinct characteristics.  Choosing the right type of material when it comes to your shoes plays a crucial role in the level of comfort, style and durability you're after.  These factors also effect the maintenance and care needs of the shoes.

Genuine Leather

Genuine leather encompasses a wide range of leather types and qualities, but mainly refers to real leather produced from various types of animal hides and is strongly associated with high quality and long-lasting durability.  Unlike suede and nubuck, it has a more polished finish and genuine leather shoes are often more hardy, making them easier to care for and most suitable for various environments. Genuine leather also offers excellent breathability and molds to the shape of your foot with wear, further enhancing comfort.  With such a forgiving nature, from the office to date night, genuine leather will always stand the test of time.

Suede

Suede shoes are crafted from the underside of animal hides, typically lamb, goat, or cow.  Suede has a luxurious feel due to the material’s extra soft finish and therefore suede shoes offer exceptional comfort and always deliver a stylish, casual look.  While the napped surface is more susceptible to water and stains they wouldn’t be your first choice on a rainy day, but if you're careful with them they're a constant when it comes to jooshing up to any outfit.  To maintain suede shoes, regular brushing and protective sprays are recommended, as well as quick-as-possible treatment of stains.

Nubuck

Nubuck, like suede, is made from animal hides, but is derived from the outer layer.  It is then sanded to achieve a soft, velvety texture which gives it more durability and a finer finish making nubuck shoes slightly more resistant to wear and tear.  Nubuck, as well as genuine leather can develop a beautiful patina over time, enhancing the character of the shoes.  Still susceptible to stains and water damage, suede also requires a bit more attention to care to keep them looking their best.

When deciding between suede, nubuck, and genuine leather, consider factors such as usage, maintenance, and of course the look you’re after.  Suede and nubuck offer softness, luxury and style which in turn means both require a little more care when it comes to maintenance, while genuine leather provides durability and timeless elegance. Understanding these differences will help you make an informed choice, ensuring your footwear is not only en pointe, but also meets your practical needs and aesthetic preferences.
